Due to the infrastructure connection between xDSL devices and the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), the devices may be exposed to overcurrent and overvoltage hazards caused by AC power collisions, power line induction, and lightning surges. Therefore, it is necessary to incorporate effective circuit protection schemes into the circuit to help xDSL telecommunications equipment avoid damage from transient surge voltages caused by lightning strikes and equipment switch operations.
